Tufa towers, Mono Lake, eastern Sierra, California
Tufa is limestone that formed underwater when calcium seeped from springs and reacted with carbonates to form towers.  They became visible when the water feeding Mono Lake was diverted to Los Angeles, causing the lake's depth to decrease.
